What is intrauterine insemination?
Intrauterine insemination is a simple artificial procedure that puts sperm directly into the uterus to increase the chances of pregnancy. The sperm is inserted around the time of egg release which may be one or two. The sperm and egg unite in the fallopian tube, which connects the uterus to the ovaries. If this happens it leads to pregnancy.
Intrauterine insemination is timed with a menstrual cycle. During the monthly cycle ovaries release one or two eggs. Sometimes fertility medicines are used to produce eggs. any method is used according to the situation.
Benefits of intrauterine insemination
IUI is possible with any medication by increasing the number of eggs available. Some of the benefits of IUI are:
- The process is far less invasive because eggs do not need to be removed from the body.
- The procedure also costs less than IVF since no egg extraction or laboratory monitoring is required.
- The timing of the procedure performed is very short; only about 60-90 seconds.
- More effective than Intracervical Insemination (ICI)
- Natural, that is unmedicated, cycle IUI is possible to perform
- Low risk for thromboembolism (blood clots) and low risk for Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS)
What are the risks of intrauterine insemination?
There are small risks of infection that can be possible with the IUI procedure. The fertility doctor uses a sterile instrument. so, the chances of infection are very rare. If medications are used for evolution induction, there is a risk of multiple pregnancies. Since, with ovulation, inductions increase the production of more than one egg. So, it also increases the chances of multiple pregnancies. So, your fertility specialist tries to balance the amount and type of medication along with the blood work and ultrasound monitoring to prevent too many eggs from being released at one time.
Sometimes ovaries release over eggs due to fertility medication (particularly medication given as an injection). This condition is called hyperstimulation syndrome. A huge number of eggs can be matured at one time and possibly released. This can result in an enlarged ovary, fluid build-up in the chest and abdomen, kidney problems, blood clots, and twisting of the ovaries. While taking medication, if you are experiencing any of these symptoms, you should immediately consult your doctor.
- dizziness or lightheadedness
- sudden weight gain of more than 5 pounds
- shortness of breath
- nausea and vomiting
- severe abdominal or pelvic pain
- sudden increase in abdominal size
