What is frozen embryo transfer (FET) ?

Frozen embryo transfer is a process that creates a path to becoming pregnant. FET uses embryos (fertilized eggs). During the FET cycle, embryos are thawed and placed into the uterus. This procedure is done at the time of the menstrual cycle. That best supports a pregnancy.

Benefits of frozen embryo transfer

The ability to freeze and thaw the embryos, eggs, and sperm through the process of vitrification is one of the greatest advances in ART ( Assisted reproductive technology ). Many fertility patients who undergo IVF can realize the added benefits of frozen embryos.

More chances at success

With the frozen embryos, you have an additional opportunity to transfer and therefore more pregnancy attempts. If you can freeze and store embryos. At the same time, you are attempting a fresh cycle transfer. If a fresh cycle is unsuccessful, you can try again without undergoing another ovarian stimulation or egg retrieval. So, your cumulative pregnancy rate increases overall from one IVF cycle.

FET (Frozen embryo transfer)

Following a fresh IVF cycle, subsequent FET cycles are less costly, because the medication is relatively minimal and there is no egg retrieval or anesthesia. With SET ( single embryo transfer ), there may be multiple FET cycle opportunities after just one egg retrieval which increases your cumulative pregnancy rate from one IVF.

FET cycles are easier to schedule

For most cycles of the patients, the FET cycle can be scheduled, when it is most convenient for them. Once you are scheduled for your FET, you will start prescribing Oran estrogen so that your uterine lining is ready for the transfer progesterone injections will then be introduced so your body can support a pregnancy.

How to prepare for frozen embryo transfer ?

Preparing for IVF, it is so important to nourish your baby and take proper care of yourself. By taking some simple steps in your lifestyle, and vitamins, and reducing stress levels, you can improve the chances of pregnancy.

Lifestyle

Before undergoing fertility treatment, it is important to pay attention to your diet and lifestyle to improve your chances of conceiving as well as a healthy baby. Consuming citrate, alcohol, and too much cocaine can reduce the chances of pregnancy. If you are planning IVF treatment, you will be advised to stop smoking, and drinking alcohol, and to limit your caffeine intake.

Stress

One of the most important tips for anyone who is trying to conceive is taking rest. An IVF cycle is very draining and physically demanding. So, it is important to try and alleviate as much stress as possible before treatment. Try to get plenty of rest, so go on holiday and practice relaxation and breathing exercises.

Precaution after frozen embryo transfer

There are no defined precautions to take after a frozen embryo transfer. But the doctors advised me to take it easy. We understand that it is hard to keep calm and not stress out while you wait to take a pregnancy test, but you have to keep reminding yourself that implantation depends on the quality of the embryo and how your uterus responds to it.

There are no foods, sleeping positions, tips, or tricks that will affect the chances of implantation but you need to be an implant and you need to be prescribed medications.

Implantation after frozen embryo transfer

The embryo attaches itself either on the same day of the transfer the next day or the next day.  Some women may experience spotting or light bleeding which may occur because of implantation.

Symptoms of Pregnancy

Some women may experience tenderness around the breasts, cramps, spotting, bleeding, or leg pain after frozen embryo transfer. However, these symptoms may be caused by the estrogen and progesterone discussed with you.

hCG levels after frozen embryo transfer

When it attaches itself to the wall of the uterus, it will begin to grow. As the embryos grow, the cell around them will release a hormone chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) , the hormone that influences the production of progesterone in the first three months of pregnancy.  The level of hCG will rise enough to be defective after 14 days, which is why that is the optimal time to take a pregnancy test.
